[BitPim-devel] Seeking support for BitPim with a Samsung SCH-a870 from NTelos

Hi,

I
recently
tried
to
set
up
BitPim
to
work
with
my
new
Samsung
SCH-a870
phone
from
NTelos
(a
local
service
provider
in
the
Virginia/West
Virginia
area).
However,
I
seem
to
be
getting
an
exception
because
my
phone's
BREW
filesystem
is
apparently
organized
differently
than
that
of
the
Samsung
SCH-a870
currently
supported
by
BitPim.

Here
is
the
basic
summary
information:
BitPim
version:
1.05
Official,
downloaded
from
the
BitPim.org
site
Operating
System:
Windows
XP
Home
with
SP2
Cell
Phone:
Samsung
SCH-a870
from
NTelos
(firmware
version
appears
to
be
'M6100D-SNTQ-6450
1
[Dec
07
2004
20:00:00]')
Cable
used
to
talk
to
the
phone:
Not
sure,
it's
labeled
SAM
A645,
but
basic
communication
seems
to
be
working
fine

Attached
to this email please
find
files
containing
the
exception,
the
BitPim
log
and
Protocol
log
in
which
BitPim
enumerates
all
the
filesystem
data,
and
a
screen
capture
of
BitPim
showing
the
filesystem
directory
structure
of
this
phone.

When
I
connect
the
phone
and
bring
up
BitPim,
and
have
BitPim
search
for
the
phone,
it
successfully
auto-detects
the
phone
with
no
error.
If
I
then
try
to
transfer
PhoneBook
data
from
the
phone,
I
consistently
get
an
exception
indicating
that
BitPim
is
trying
to
read
the
ringtone
index,
by
looking
for
a
specific
directory
('brew/16452/mr')
which
I
can
see
does
not
exist
on
my
phone.
The attached
"Exception.txt"
file
shows
this
exception.
(By
the
way,
I
let
the
BitPim
program
send
in
an
exception
report
already,
before
I
did
this
further
analysis.)

BitPim
has
no
problem
reading
and
displaying
the
filesystem.
The
two
attached log files show
BitPim
gathering
directory
and
file
information
from
the
phone.
Although
not
recorded
in
these
particular
logs,
I
was
also
able
to
copy
an
image
file
(.JPG)
from
the
phone,
which
was
taken
by
the
built-in
camera.

I
quickly
browsed
the
source
code,
and
see
that
the
directory
structure
is
supposedly
inherited
from
an
SCH-a950,
but
I
can't
tell
if
the
defines
are
intended
to
be
specific
to
a
particular
cell
service
provider.
So
I
don't
know
if
my
phone's
directory
structure
is
different
because
it's
from
NTelos,
or
because
of
the
firmware
version
(although
the
version
doesn't
appear
to
be
very
new).

At
this
point,
I
assume
I
cannot
use
BitPim
unless
a
derivative
version
of
the
SCH-a870
model
is
developed
that
understands
this
filesystem
directory
structure,
correct?
I'd
really
appreciate
any
help
you
can
provide,
so
that
I
could
use
BitPim
to
manage
my
phone.
If
there
is
any
other
information
I
can
provide,
please
let
me
know.

Thanks
for
your
attention,

Andy
McLaughlin
