Now that SQLite database files are portable across platforms, is there still a need to export/import BitPim database to a text file?

The need was as a backup you could see - binary data just isn't that convincing.
For example can you verify that a particular entry is in your backup?

It is also useful for transforming data outside of BitPim. You can dump to
text, edit/chop/add in whatever way, and then put back in again, or send
to someone else.

Admittedly vcard/vcal could perform this somewhat, but you'd have to export
for each type of data.

Finally have a look at something analogous, in the form of Subversion and
their dump files.
