How do you know if a phone is Brew capable or not? Is there some indicator
in the filesystem?

The "Brew" in BitPim is misnamed. It really should be "Diagnostics" or more
accurately "Qualcomm Diagnostics". The Qualcomm diagnostics mode is used
by Brew developers to develop their software.

The real Brew is at http://brew.qualcomm.com/brew/en/

In short it is a way to ensure you have no choice for getting executable
content onto your phone, except by what the carrier decides to let you
see and requires you to pay for. Verizon Wireless, Alltel and USCC are
the main carriers that use it. They give it cool sounding names such
as Get It Now and EasyEdge to hide that they they have complete control
over you. The actual content is pretty sucky as well.

The alternative, and fortunately more popular, is J2ME.

Generally all CDMA chipsets from Qualcomm support the diagnostics mode
and BitPim can access the filesystem that way. The phones themselves may
support J2ME, or Brew if the carrier hates their customers.

(Is my opinion clear enough :-)
