I tried transferring files between the PC and the miniSD card (through the phone using BitPim), and it was painfully SLOW! Users would be better off putting the media files on the miniSD card themselves (connected directly to the PC). BitPim would then allow those files to be used as ringtone IDs and picture IDs (a lot more space on those cards).

What mechanism are you thinking of to allow users to use mp3s and sounds as
ringtones?

On a good day I see about 25kb/s speaking the diagnostics protocol.
This is in large part due to the small transfer size (256 byte units)
and the need to acknowledge each block as it is sent.

You may want to try an experiment. Generate the entire protocol for
sending the whole file in one go and just write that to the com port
discarding anything coming back.

That will tell you the maximum speed that you can send data to the
phone. I suspect it will be a bit better than 25kb/s since there
won't be "thinking" time between each block. However I doubt it
will be in the megabyte per second range which is easily surpassed
by most memory cards.

Did you try the Bluetooth yet, that is even slower.

Users would copy their ringtones & image files onto the SD cards, Bitim would then make those media files available for contact assignment, calendar event assignment, and wallpaper/ringtone assignment.
