I'm having difficulty with updates or new checkouts of the source.
Is it likely that the following message on sourceforge is the key to
the problem?
Is there something else I should have done? Other than:
"svn co https://bitpim.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/bitpim/trunk/
bitpim"

Prior to todays attempts, I have successfully checked out or updated
bitpim many times.
Thanks
David

could not connect to server (https://svn.sourceforge.net)
Your source tree still have references to the old naming convention.
You'd need to start fresh and co an entire source tree.

I did:
"svn co https://bitpim.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/bitpim/trunk/bitpim"
In a new directory, as I said in my previous message.
What did I miss?

You didn't miss anything, instead you found a broken link in the
source tree. The issue has been fixed. Thanks for reporting the
problem.
