A Samsung A670 user on Canadian Telus network reported several
differences in his phone's filesystem from what I see on Verizon in
this note:
http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/samsung_a670/message/2796

(Not sure if group membership is required to read this. I can
reproduce his note if necessary.)

Have we seen this with other phones where the filesystem structure
differs with the carrier? Is there a reliable way to detect which
network the phone is on? (Verizon certainly plasters their name all
over the hardware and software.) Or will there have to be separate
Verizon and Telus selections in the phone model preference set-up?

Yes. In this case the Verizon phones use Brew for running programs
and the same model with all other carriers uses J2ME. The firmware
is usually *COMPLETELY* different. For the LG phones like this
(eg VX4600) the Brew model and the J2ME model have nothing in common.
The phonebook fields are very different, and the media is stored in
a completely different way.

Not immediately.

We would have to work out how it is done per carrier.

Yup. You'll notice that the phone selection choices already list
carriers, and the online help says that if a carrier is listed then
only pick if your carrier matches. (Not that this stops people).

At some point I would like to do a wizard that goes step by step
through selecting the phone, trying to auto-detect as much as
possible. I'd also like to have all phone model code have a
quick sanity check that they are talking to the right model of
phone (probably something in getfundamentals).
