Discussion:
[BitPim-devel] Media data storage design change

All media data (wallpapers, ringtones, etc.) are now being stored
(and retrieved) via Sqlite virtual tables. This method allows a
common way of handling all BitPim data, while the virtual table
backend stores the media data as native file items. One of the
advantages of this method is not having to deal with native file
names and directories. This change will be in the next release.

VX5300 & build 3937:

Some of this may be things I did wrong, or maybe needs to be better
documented:

After some fiddling with Bluetooth I got the phone to connect. Initially
it seemed that bitpim saw it, but I couldn't get anything:
"LG-vx5300 on com3: The phone is not responding while transitioning mode
from none to brew.
See the help for troubleshooting tips."

It didn't give any indication that it was a com problem, but manually
changing it to com4 solved that.

Periodically, I got this error:
"Your phone (LG VX5300) does not answer properly.
This can be due to an internal problem of your phone.

Please power your phone off and on, and try again."

It was still connected and would receive data, but I couldn't write to the
phone. Cycling the phone's power solved it.

Oddly, there are several midi files in the "sounds" directory that don't
show up in the ringtones list in the phone... but when I copied one of them
into the "ringtones" directory, it then showed up as a ringtone and I could
pick it. Also the "ringtones" directory is initially empty (all the canned
ringtones in the phone don't show up in bitpim).

OK... since I originally typed this I see these sounds are viewable on the
phone's menu via settings & tools / memory / my sounds... but they don't
seem to be used anywhere...

I was able to delete the original pictures from the images directory, but
there seem to be some additional canned pixtures available as wallpaper
that bitpim doesn't see.

Overall it seems to work pretty good. Now that I know it works, I'll have
to go out and buy a cable or bluetooth adapter for home (I was testing it
on the projection screen computer in the conference room at work, the only
place where there's a bluetooth adapter) so I can play with it some more.

Dana,
What OS are you running? I am on OS X10.4 and I haven't seen any of
these issues via Bluetooth connection.

It was WinXP, using a Logitech bluetooth mouse adapter.

Uploading pictures (wallpaper):

If I drag a large (640x480) picture into the camera, bitpim resizes it to
one of the two wallpaper sizes... and the results are horrible. If,
however, I resize it first to the final size in Paint Shop Pro, bitpim
doesn't resize it, and it looks OK. Bitpim should allow at least a 640x480
picture to be uploaded, since the phone's camera supports that big a picture.

Other that that it works fine.

More on VX5300:

With the data cable, much more reliable than bluetooth.

I pulled the phonebook from the phone and started cleaning it up. With my
old phone (Verizon transferred the contacts from my old phone to the new) I
had separate entries for different numbers for the same person (e.g. Bob
home, Bob cell). Since the new phone allows multiple numbers for a single
contact, I added those numbers and deleted the redundant entries. However,
they didn't upload back to the phone, i.e. I lost the added
numbers. However, I *didn't* lose multiple numbers added through the phone
itself... unless those didn't get overwritten by bitpim?

Also at the conclusion of the phonebook write, the phone reset itself (and
naturally, bitpim lost communication for a few moments).

I also note that the phone only allows 10 entries per group (which bitpim
calls categories). If I edit group information for a contact, bitpim
doesn't send it to the phone, even if the group isn't full.

I edited the name for one contact (changed the first letter from lowercase
to uppercase) but after sending the data the phone still displayed only the
lowercase version..

I created a brand new contact in bitpim, with two phone numbers and a
group, and all of that information was sent to the phone successfully.

I then edited that contact to add another number and change the group, and
that information sent successfully. I was also able to change one digit of
the number and send that change (I thought perhaps it was comparing the
record length to determine whether to change it).

Any idea what phonebook entries #BAL, #MIN, and #PMT are? They show in
bitpim but not in the phone.

Ringtones convert and upload OK, gonna mess with image files now.

These are special hardcoded contact numbers.

They call Verizon's system and iirc, take you directly to:

your current BALance,
MINutes used this billing cycle,
PayMnT by phone (also gives total BAL & date due).

Thanks, that's what I figured.

Is there any support (now or anticipated) for the Motorola V325i? I got
the USB drivers, and bitpim connects to it as other CDMA. I can see the
filesystem but that's as far as I got, my daughter (it's her phone) wanted
it back. Don't care about the phonebook, mainly want to download pictures
and upload ringtones.
